in the landscape at South San Diego’s Otay Valley Regional Park— memorials to the deceased constructed of once-precious belongings. Stuffed animals, eyeglasses, seashells, and votive candles, these remnants are worn by the elements and will eventually vanish, giving the memorials a finite lifespan of their own. While the shrines may be for people unknown to Villaseñor, her brushstrokes render the paintings tender portraits of grief's materiality. In her images, the park becomes a liminal space, a silent threshold where loss is treated with care. +0000 Leslye Villasenor https://leslyevillasenor.com/The-land-is-witness La Tierra es Testigo the land is witness La Tierra es Testigo (the land is witness) is the result of an environmental justice project created during the Artists At Work (AAW) Borderlands Fellowship in collaboration with the Institute for Public Strategies (IPS) and Casa Familiar. Each month, we hosted a series of botanical illustration workshops for community members. These workshops were designed to provide an educational opportunity to learn about key native plant species and to recognize the importance of the natural landscape in shaping cultural identity, collective memory, and the prosperity of individuals and communal well-being.&nbsp; This project aims to support the park’s preservation and help maintain these accessible public spaces while honoring and respecting the park's history, biodiversity, and its echoes. The following artworks depict a collection of memorials located throughout the Otay Valley Regional Park. These objects have become a vital part of the park’s identity over the years, evolving and decaying in tandem with the surrounding natural environment. Ultimately, these altars merge with nature and serve as poignant reminders of grief, loss, and the essence of those who have passed away. It is hoped that the presence of these memorials fosters respect, awareness, and positive change, standing as a testament to a future where acts of crime and violence are merely shadows of the past. Struggles &amp; Nostalgia This art project was made during The Front Arte &amp; Cultura New Native Narratives Apprenticeship Program.In this series of works, I explore the importance of remembering as a tool for healing and acceptance. Drawing from nostalgic early interactions, moments, and places from my childhood, I retell my story by creating new narratives that acknowledge life’s hardships, mental struggles, and my transborder identity. Highlighting the importance of unity and family bonds. Furthermore, I examine the concept of imperfection through the use of found, biodegradable, discarded materials. These surfaces, which eventually disappear over time, mirror the fleeting nature of memory. The Imperfect materials retain traces of their past purpose, allowing them to convey their original essence.
